Tallapoosa River
The Tallapoosa River is a great spot to fly-fish. The river spans 265 miles before it merges with Coosa River. The waters teem with warm-water fish like redeye bass, striped, spotted, and striped bass, and panfish. One particularly popular area of the Tallapoosa to visit runs from Jaybird Creek to Horseshoe Bend Military Park. It’s a great spot to fish and paddle around in. Sipsey Fork
When you think about fly-fishing, you probably think about catching trout. Most bodies of water in Alabama are a bit too warm for that particular fish, but Sipsey Fork, branching off the Black Warrior River, is an exception. The turbines in the area pull water from Lewis Smith Lake, which allows the area to support trout all year long. Rainbow trout is stocked beneath the Lewis Smith Lake dam multiple times a year and fishermen can follow the fish for at least 12 miles downstream.
The Alabama Gulf Coast
Fly-fishing in saltwater is an activity that many associate with chartered boats, but you don’t have to invest in professional help. In fact, you can catch all manner of fish on your own along the Alabama Gulf Coast. This popular fly-fishing spot is home to Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Dauphin Island, and boasts a wide variety of fishing (and vacation) options. You can catch bluefish, whiting, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, hardtail jack, and even some redfish or drum.
Aldridge Creek
Aldridge Creek Greenway lies just south of Huntsville. This waterway offers plenty of public access points and offers fly-fishers bass as well as bluegill. If you find an area where the water is at least 18 inches deep, you could also reel in pounder. Just take your time and be patient, and you’ll reap the rewards.
